Its alive!

Got the truck last Friday and it runs much better now. Guthrie’s Transmission installed the new parts and didn’t have any troubles aside from a corroded thermostat housing.

While talking to Gary about one of the other jeeps they are currently working on (a cool blue 40’s jeep truck), we discussed the next pressing item, the radiator. It’s in pretty bad shape and is missing the fan shroud and overflow bottle. From the looks of it, its the original 2 core.

I got back to my office and decided to cobble up a more formal list to keep everything straight in my head and under my budget.

Budget! What budget? I hadn’t even given any thought of a budget until this point. Its kind of a scary prospect to see what you have spent or will spend over time on a project like this. I have some historical perspective from a 68 Commando project my brother went through several years back but outside of that, my only knowledge has been gained from what I have read online on forums and websites or from a few Jeep books I have. My handiness with tools is really only from a artistic/woodworking angle so I am really a novice when things shift to the automotive world (outside of changing oil, tires etc.) As they say though, lets give it the old collage try. Here is the J-10 project as it stands:

Air Cleaner

Fed-Ex just stopped by:

Jeep
If it says Jeep, you got to use it

It will look real nice on top of the new valve covers.

Valve Covers

I though I would dress up the engine a bit, the stock valve covers were really nasty so I ordered a set of these:

Fancy!
Fancy!

They will go on at the same time as the carb and manifold, I think I might replace the air cleaner as well.

The parts start flowing

New manifold and bolts, check!

New carb and fuel line adapter/ filter, check!

The knowledge and skills to preform the install…

Not so much, I’ll leave this one to Guthrie’s Transmissions.

Jeep, Jeep!

The Jeep has been asleep for a while, but parts have been ordered and the first in a series of upgrades has begun. He needs a name…

First Post!!

I just picked up a new to me 83 jeep j-10 Laredo pickup. Its specs are as follows:
  • 360 V-8 175,000 miles (yikes!, has been rebuilt though)
  • Selectrac 4 wheel drive
  • 3″ body lift
  • AC
  • electric windows

That’s the good, here’s the bad:

  • Ride is rough, due to a combination of the lift’s old bushings, worn springs and old shocks
  • some small rust spots above the windshield and in the cab
  • cracked windshield
  • worn out interior
  • automatic door locks not so automatic anymore
  • no heat (lever or cable is broke)
  • needs some bodywork (combination of the rust spots and a ding on the hood and passenger fender)
I’ll be posting about it as I work my way through it.
